We had planned on returning via Kalgoorlie, but the road was closed due to massive bushfires, so we decided to take the inland route from Esperance to Wave Rock and York. Wave Rock, in Hyden, is 382 km from Esperance. The route takes you back to Ravensthorpe and then along State Route 40.

The drive to Esperance takes one through the so-called Wheatbelt. One of the nine regions of Western Australia, this area surrounds the Perth metropolitan area and extends east to the Goldfields-Esperance region..
